Social Media and Screen Time – Why Making Community Connections is Important

CategoriesUncategorized

As screen time and social media becomes increasingly woven into the daily lives of kids and teens, the need for real, meaningful community connections has never been more critical. According to recent research, excessive social media use is linked to increased social isolation and a decline in healthy, active behaviors among youth.

Helping your kids and teens put down screens and engage with friends and peers, can be a life-changing step towards building confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging. The YMCA of Orange County offers a variety of programs and activities designed to help young people reconnect and find their community.

Camps
One way to ensure community in your child’s life is through camps at The Y. From day camps to overnight camps, The Y offers a range of programs with opportunities for every child. From specialty camps for sports, arts, or STEAM; to summer “sleepaway” camps with outdoor experiences, team building, and daily activities through Camp E.L.K and Camp Oakes, the YMCA camps provide a multitude of opportunities for kids and teens to create unplugged memories, learn new skills, and form lasting friendships.

Youth Development
At the YMCA, learning, growing, and thriving are top priorities in our Child & Youth Development Program. Kids K-8th grade can join a before or after school program to experience enrichment opportunities such as STEAM activities, sports and recreation, and homework support. The Child & Youth Development program allows kids to socialize with friends in a healthy and safe environment.

Adventure Guides
Adventure Guides presents the option of a family-centered program that allows children to experience nature, community, and the core values of the Y – caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility – through a father/daughter or father/son camping program. Regular father/child expeditions including camp outs, bowling, hiking, and more help to encourage screen-free time and foster community.

In an age of digital isolation and loneliness, community and belonging at an early age can go a long way. This summer, join a program at the YMCA of Orange County to give your child the community they need. For more information on camps and programs, visit ymcaoc.org.
