Never Too Late to Learn New Skills: Kelly’s Swim Journey at the YMCA

CategoriesUncategorized

May is Water Safety Awareness Month—a time to highlight the importance of learning essential skills that can save lives and build confidence. For Kelly, a member of the Mission Viejo Family YMCA, learning to swim was a life-changing step. Growing up, swimming wasn’t a common part of life in her home country, and her mother never learned how to swim. That mindset carried into her adult life—until last summer, when she decided to take the plunge and join the YMCA.

Overcoming Fear with Support

When Kelly first started swim lessons at the Y, she was nervous. She initially joined a group lesson but found that her fear of the water made it difficult to keep up. Kelly realized she needed more one-on-one attention, so she started working with Coach Diane, who helped her build confidence in the water.

“I was really scared at first,” Kelly admitted. “But Coach Diane was so patient and encouraging. She helped me take things one step at a time.”

With dedication and support, Kelly has made huge progress. She now feels comfortable in the water, can do some strokes with a flotation belt, and is working toward swimming without it. Her journey isn’t just about overcoming fear—it’s about gaining a lifelong skill that will open up new experiences for her and her family.

A Family Affair

One of the most rewarding aspects of Kelly’s journey has been sharing it with her 2-year-old daughter. Every Saturday, they attend parent-child swim lessons together, making memories while learning essential water safety skills.

“It’s amazing to experience this with her,” Kelly said. “I didn’t grow up around water, so I want her to feel comfortable and safe in it from a young age.”

Looking Ahead

Kelly’s goal is to keep improving her swimming skills so she can confidently explore the waters in Colombia and Japan—two destinations she hopes to visit this year.

Kelly’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to learn to swim. Whether you’re a beginner looking for private lessons, prefer the motivation of a group class, or want to introduce your child to the water, the Y has programs designed to meet you where you are.

Swimming isn’t just a skill—it’s a lifesaving tool and a gateway to fun, fitness, and adventure. If you’ve been thinking about learning, make this the year you dive in. Just like Kelly, you might surprise yourself with how far you can go!
