Finding Community and Independence: James’s Journey with New Horizons at the YMCA
For over 13 years, James has been an active and enthusiastic member of the New Horizons program at the YMCA, and his experience has been nothing short of life changing. His mother, Patricia, first heard about the program during a parent-student meeting at the Orange County School District’s adult school program. Another mother spoke so highly of it that Patricia knew she had to look into it for James. Now, more than a decade later, she couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities it has given him.
James, 32, started attending New Horizons when he was 19. His mom describes James as a warm, friendly, and easygoing person who has always wanted to be part of a community. Finding a place where he felt truly accepted was important to him and his mom, and New Horizons has provided James with exactly that.
“It has been a positive move for James. We’re very happy he found the YMCA,” Patricia said. “He has really flourished, and it has helped him become more independent too.”
Through New Horizons, James attends events, participates in social groups, and enjoys a wide variety of activities. Each month, the program releases a calendar of events, and James takes great joy in circling the ones he wants to attend. James finds joy and companionship through New Horizons, whether he’s bowling—his longtime favorite—attending social dances, or participating in other one of the many other fun events offered each month.
Beyond the fun and engaging events, New Horizons helps members develop social and emotional skills. The program provides structured opportunities to learn how to make friends, hold conversations, and gain confidence in social settings.
“They put on social groups a couple of times a month where members can sit together, talk about their feelings, share their strengths, and discuss things they want to improve on,” Patricia explained. “It’s a great way for them to connect.”
A significant part of what makes New Horizons so impactful is the dedication of its staff and volunteers. Patricia describes them as patient, understanding, and truly invested in the well-being of every member.
“The team members are awesome with James,” Patricia says. “They’re very patient, understanding, accepting, and helpful—not just with James but with everyone in the program.”
Safety is a top priority at New Horizons, which is a crucial factor for parents like Patricia. The staff never leaves any participant alone, even when waiting for a ride. If someone is running late, a team member stays behind to ensure they’re not left waiting alone.
Not only has New Horizons provided James with a strong community, but it has also allowed Patricia to connect with other parents. Whether it’s chatting during drop-off and pick-up, attending holiday parties, or simply catching up at other events, the program fosters meaningful relationships for everyone involved.
James now attends 7 to 9 events each month, and he’s not alone in his commitment—many members have been part of the program for over a decade. The diverse range of activities and the deep sense of belonging make New Horizons a program that members want to stay in for the long term.
For families considering a program for adults with special needs, Patricia highly recommends New Horizons. “If you’re looking for a safe, welcoming, and fun place for your loved one, the YMCA is a fantastic choice,” she said. “I just recommended it to a friend the other day.”
