Champion of Inclusion and Empowerment – YMCA Staff Member Honored with Award

CategoriesUncategorized

Alex Sanchez, a dedicated team member of the YMCA of Orange County’s New Horizons program, recently received the 2025 Spotlight Award for Direct Support Professional from the Regional Center of Orange County. The award honors individuals for their work on behalf of people with developmental disabilities – something Alex has been doing for decades through his service and unwavering commitment to the community.

Alex’s impact is best illustrated through the experiences of Christine Horn, a 34-year-old with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and longtime New Horizons member. Christine, who uses an AAC communication device, is a passionate advocate for individuals with CP and AAC usage. Her own words speak volumes about the program’s impact, and Alex’s role within it.

Christine describes New Horizons as “one of the best things happening in my life,” emphasizing the friendships, memories, and sense of family she has found there. She praises the program’s organization and the “awesome, dedicated staff,” highlighting the inclusive environment where individuals are seen for who they are, not their disabilities. “They see me, not my wheelchair!” Christine exclaims, underscoring the profound respect and understanding fostered by the New Horizons team, particularly Alex.

A shared passion for running has forged a special connection between Christine and Alex. Christine has participated in 18 half marathons, and her dream was to run one with Alex. That dream became a reality at the 2024 OC Marathon, a testament to Alex’s dedication and commitment to supporting Christine’s goals. Christine’s joy at the finish line, surrounded by cheering family and friends, encapsulates the empowering experience Alex helped create.

Alex’s impact extends far beyond running. He is a favorite among his peers and New Horizons members, known for his caring, supportive, and positive approach. He transcends the traditional role of staff, becoming a true friend to those he serves. Alex listens attentively to members’ dreams and goals, working tirelessly to help them achieve them.

Alex’s dedication to building community, fostering inclusion, and empowering individuals is what makes Alex so deserving of this honor. Congratulations, Alex!
