August is Family Fun Month!

Put some puppy-dog pep into those dog days of summer by gathering with your pack for Family Fun Month in August!

The American Academy of Pediatrics says play – both with caregivers and with friends – goes a long way to helping kids grow up healthy, bright and happy. At YMCA Orange County, we take play pretty seriously around here.

With a robust calendar of events and regular schedule of activities, YMCA Orange County embodies the importance of play as a tool to build healthy minds, spirits and bodies. Some of our ongoing programs include:

Family Guides: Promoting the Y’s core values (Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility), Family Guides engages the whole family in activities that promote nature, fun, community and family bonding. Parents/caregivers model, teach and demonstrate the Y’s core values while giving kids the opportunity to practice and celebrate them. Children learn leadership and responsibility by selecting activities, making decisions and choosing appropriate courses of action. These are skills that transcend the program and become an important part of their lives.

Adventure Guides: This incredible program emphasizes parental and caregiver involvement in children’s development through games, crafts, songs, stories, skits, ceremonies and outdoor pursuits. The idea is to get to know your kids while they’re still kids. With different groups for families with kids as young as 5, there is something for everyone in this hands-on, meaningful program.

Family Fitness: Whether you want to work out as a family or provide a (free) safe and active place for your child while you get in those reps, the Y is your partner in supporting lifelong wellness, fitness and community. Come in for unlimited group classes, strength and cardio equipment, swimming and outdoor fitness options at select locations, health and fitness challenges to motivate the whole family and personal training. The Y Fitness App even allows you to take your fitness with you everywhere you go. If health and wellness begin at home, think of your local Y as your home away from home.
