Youth & Government

"Democracy must be learned by each generation"

Youth & Government offers experiential opportunities in public policy and community activism while preparing youth to succeed in college and in life.  This YMCA program enhances leadership skills and empowers our youth to be an active voice in their community through hands on learning emphasizing critical thinking, public speaking, and activism.

Model Legislature & Court

State-wide educational program involving 2,500 teens. During a 5-day model legislature and court, teen delegates “take over” the chamber and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme
Court, and Governor’s Office to present and discuss policy proposals they have developed throughout the year.

Mock Trials

Under the guidance of volunteer attorneys and judges, students play various roles in mock legal proceedings in courtrooms across the county. Youth learn about the legal process and gain confidence and skills in:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Research
  • Advocacy
  • Public Speaking

Building the Next Generation of Leaders

Participants develop skills and character traits that promote ethical leadership, civic engagement, and success in life:

  • Responsibility and integrity
  • Social competence and awareness
  • Appreciation for diversity
  • Problem‐solving and communication skills
  • Self‐reliance and a sense of purpose

Youth Making a Real Difference in their Communities

The YMCA Youth & Government program has resulted in the introduction of significant bill proposals to our state legislature including the mandatory seat belt and helmet law.

In addition, mentoring and collaborations with local business and community leaders provide students with networking opportunities and the chance to make a difference. Youth work with local organizations and leaders to meet community needs through service projects, internships, and advocacy.
