Service Learning projects offer both youth and adults an opportunity to learn about important issues, take action, and make a difference in the world around them.
Service learning and character development activities are an integral part of our youth programs and afterschool curriculum. Service learning provides a holistic learning and community engagement experience and supports the development of substantive knowledge, critical thinking and leadership skills, positive character traits, and community involvement. A comprehensive service learning project includes four main components: preparation, action, reflection, and celebration:
Preparation: Youth learn about the cause they are addressing and what efforts are being taken locally and nationally to assist; Youth engage in goal setting, planning, and promotion to support the cause.
Action: Youth educate and advocate for the cause; Youth collect donations in support of the cause.
Reflection: Youth reflect on what they have learned and gained in their experience with the project through written reflections, discussions, journals or video documentaries.
Celebration: Youth share and celebrate their accomplishments and what they have learned with pictures, reports, and media releases.
